If you haven’t looked at my first comic this will make no sense.
Don’t worry it’s a new concept to me as well, if you understood, congrats, but anyway, for the rest of us.
Deus ex machina
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The phrase deus ex machina (Latin IPA: [ˈdeːus eks ˈmaːkʰina] (literally “god out of a machine”) describes an artificial, or improbable, character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot (such as an angel suddenly appearing to solve problems).
Doctors are people too
March 6, 2008One word: MEDCEST.
Possibly the first concept mentioned to us at fresher’s camp, Medcest takes the don’t screw the crew maxim and multiplies it by 180, then flips it on it’s head.
One our first day of class, during one of our lectures from a 6th year, she started with this statement.
“Look around you, there is a 50% chance that you will end up marrying someone in this room.”
She then showed us a wedding photo from the last weekend, apparently there had been 6 med weddings in the last few months.
Yes, medicine is isolating, and it takes a lot of effort just to keep your friends outside of the school. This is where Medcest comes in.
We had our first big social event last night, a pub crawl. It was epic, this thing made Ensoc look like a summer BBQ. We did a circle of the city dressed as a circus and scared locals who will never be going to a hospital again.
There got to a point in the night, the second to last bar, where something just flipped and everything started getting very friendly. It was hilarious to observe. Sadly I don’t think too much happened, and I didnt spot much awkwardness this morning.
Then again I was pretty hungover
Ewww!
March 5, 2008So we finally got to meet our cadavers yesterday afternoon, twas quite an experience.
The guy in charge of the laboratory gave us a bit of a demonstration first, he was incredibly keen.
Was a little weird to start off with, but you just had to remember, that yes these were living beings, but they wanted their bodies to be used to train us medical students.
Also, they’re starting with the work now, still not quite full steam, but it’s coming. And it’s not gonna be easy, but I think I’m enjoying it so far.
My Truman Show
March 3, 2008As you can see, I’m a little bored, and yes I have completely stolen the style of xkcd, but hey, imitation is the highest form of flattery

Intro to Med
March 3, 2008Well, I have now officially survived 3 days of Medicine, sadly it’s been three days of socializing and introductory lectures, so it’s actually nothing to be proud of.
I opened my Musculoskeletal systems course notes on Monday and had to slam it shut, I opened to a random page and there was a diagram of a foot with about a hundred parts labeled, unreasonable.
I still have nowhere to live, but I’ve started looking.
It’s been a good few days, Friday was a long day, lots of sitting and listening, then in the afternoon we got shown the inside of a dead guy, it was pretty damn cool, no-one was really disturbed by it either, we’re a strange bunch of people.
I had a cool story or two but I’ve forgotten them now. Whoops.
We meet our cadaver tomorrow afternoon, I get to touch my very first dead person, yay!
It has come to me that to most people that isn’t really something to be excited about, hmmm, weirdos.
